Energy Increasing for an Energy Bill

   Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman are continuing to seek a consensus on a scaled-back energy bill. News reports indicate Democrats will try and gain support from Republican Senators Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Scott Brown, Richard Lugar, and George LeMieux. Senator Jeff Bingaman is chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.

The White House process to select a nominee to replace retiring Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens will be handled by several key staff with strong ties to Capitol Hill.
 
      White House Counsel Bob Bauer (formerly partner at Perkins Coie LLP) has worked as a counsel to former Sen. Tom Daschle, as General Counsel to former Sen. Tom Bradley's 2000 presidential campaign, as a legal advisor to Sen. John Kerry's 2004 voter registration and turnout effort, and as General Counsel to then-Sen. Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign.
 
      Bauer's wife, Anita Dunn, has been a media advisor for the 2008 Obama presidential campaign, an advisor to former Senate Democratic Leader Tom Daschle, a communications director for former Sen. Tom Bradley, a media consultant for the campaigns of Sen. Evan Bayh, Rep. John Dingell, and Lloyd Doggett, and an advisor to Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
 
      Susan Davies, Associate Counsel in the White House counsel's office, was the General Counsel of the Senate Judiciary Committee and Chief Counsel for Intellectual Property.
 
      Chris Kang, Special Assistant to the President for Legislative Affairs, was the director of floor operations for Senate Majority Leader Richard Durbin, as well as his counsel on the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Salary Survey Shows Top Earners

National Journal's biennial salary survey of trade associations and other Washington, D.C. groups shows a Capitol Hill background in some top earners in 2008.

Former Congressman Billy Tauzin made $4.48 million as CEO of PhRMA.
 
      Former Congressman Steve Bartlett made $1.63 million as president and CEO of the Financial Services Roundtable.
      Chip Kahn (former LA to Sen. Dan Quayle, and subcommittee staff director at House Ways & Means) made $2.33 million as president of the Federation of American Hospitals.
      Karen Ignagni (former staff member to Sen. Claiborne Pell, and former professional staff member at the then called Senate Labor and Human Services Committee) made $2.08 million as president of America's Health Insurance Plans.
      Jack Gerard (former Legislative Director for Sen. Jim McClure, former LA to Rep. George Hansen) took in $1.64 million (mostly deferred compensation) for four months at the American Petroleum Institute.
      Alex Flint (former staff member to Sen. Pete Domenici, and former clerk on Senate Appropriations) made $788,042 as senior vice president at the Nuclear Energy Institute.
      Kurt Pfotenhauer (former Chief of Staff for Sen. Gordon Smith, and former Chief of Staff for Rep. Denny Smith) made $584,835 as CEO of the American Land & Title Association.

Former Hill Staffers Earn Big Pay on K Street

   The size of K Street compensation for former Capitol Hill staffers is slowly becoming known as CY2008 tax returns of national trade associations become publicly available. Roll Call newspaper today highlighted 25 top earners making more than $350,000.  Of those twenty-five, the Capitol Hill Access database identified ten who came from careers on Capitol Hill. Their names, total 2008 compensation (including salary, bonus, deferred compensation, etc), former positions, and links to their web biographies appear below:
 
Bryant Hall (PhRMA) $651,049 (former legislative director for Sen. Bob Graham, and staff director on Senate Veterans' Affairs Committee).
